Użyj com.firebase:geofire-android:2.1.1. Może to problem z wersją. To rozwiązało to dla mnie.

Miałem podobny problem, a został rozwiązany, biegając go w emulatorze z Google Play włączoną i zaktualizowaną. Zasadniczo utwórz nowe urządzenie wirtualne, które ma Google Play (nie tylko Google API).
